The Trinidad
& Tobago Golf Association (T&TGA) is the Governing Body for
Golf in Trinidad & Tobago and comprises the membership of the
seven Golf Clubs in the Country:St. Andrew's, Pointe-a-Pierre, Chaguaramas,
Ste. Madeleine, Brechin Castle, Leewards Golf Club (Tobago), Plantations
Golf and Country Club (Tobago) and was founded in the early 1960s.
Our
objective is to promote and safeguard the interest of golf in accordance
with the Royal and Ancient 'R&A' of St. Andrew's, Scotland and
the United States Golf Association, 'USGA'.
The
Trinidad & Tobago Golf Association inaugurated the Caribbean Amateur
Golf Championships in 1957, played between Jamaica and Trinidad &
Tobago which has since grown to include 11 states and is now the premier
golfing event in Caribbean Golf and which spawned the Caribbean Golf
Association. In the 47 years of the tournament Trinidad & Tobago
has won 16 times and hosted it 9 times, we are the host for 2003.
Among
the numerous tournaments held, some for charity hosted by Member Clubs
and others run directly by the T&TGA, our flagship event annually
is the Trinidad & Tobago Open Championship. This tournament is
the oldest in the Caribbean and is among the oldest in the World,
started in 1907 and played continuously since then. In 1972 professionals
played for the first time and in the years to follow they came from
all over the world, some of these professionals have gone on to playing
on the European Tour and the P.G.A. One of our local players, Stephen
Ames, is now a successful campaigner on the P.G.A. Tour.
The Trinidad
& Tobago Golf Association has a junior committee that looks after
the affairs of Junior Golf and currently has over 300 juniors in the
various programmes. We also participate and host the Caribbean Junior
Golf Championships and have been very successful at this level. The
continued growth of our Junior Programme is very satisfying.
Trinidad
& Tobago is currently conducting a training programme for our local
professionals; we have sourced a British PGA Professional to train the
teaching Pros and to also have Clinics for Juniors and Seniors throughout
the Country.
In
summary, the T&TGA with the Junior arm, is committed to the further
development of Golf, and to fostering relationships with principals,
clubs and Associations locally, regionally, and internationally in an
effort to build a strong organization, thus providing an opportunity
for boys and girls, men and women to be part of a character building
sport with career opportunities. Also being cognizant of our National
interest we work with our Tourist Board and other stakeholders to promote
and encourage Golf Tourism in Trinidad & Tobago.
